VISA POLICIES BOOST INBOUND TOURISM
Since December 2023, China has introduced visa-free entry for citizens of 43 countries, allowing stays of up to 30 days. In addition, from early 2024, the visa-free transit period for citizens of 54 countries was extended to 240 hours. These more accessible entry policies have significantly increased inbound tourist numbers, particularly for short-term leisure travel, exhibitions, sporting events, concerts, and business trips.
Thanks to Shanghai’s well-developed infrastructure, frequent and cost-effective flight connections, and distinctive cultural appeal, the city has emerged as a top destination for inbound tourists. In the first four months of 2025, Shanghai recorded 2.6 million international arrivals—up 37.1% YoY—surpassing pre-COVID levels in both December 2024 and again in April 2025. The longer visa-free stay has translated into greater spending potential, with the ease of access also encouraging repeat visits and frequent purchases.
