The sale, negotiated by Savills Australia and New Zealand on behalf of the Farquhar family, marks the end of nearly three decades of sole ownership and stewardship by the family, ushering in a new era for one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues.
Located just 50 metres from Suncorp Stadium, formerly known as Lang Park, The Caxton Hotel has long served as the unofficial headquarters for pre- and post-match celebrations. Whether it’s the electric atmosphere of State of Origin, the intensity of rugby union tests, or the passion of major soccer fixtures, the Caxton has been the place where Queensland’s sporting triumphs are toasted, and heartbreaks consoled.
Its location on the legendary Caxton Street; a historic artery of Brisbane’s entertainment precinct, cements its status as a cultural cornerstone. Caxton Street itself has evolved over the past century into a bustling hub of pubs, restaurants, and nightlife, becoming inseparable from the identity of Suncorp Stadium. The street’s famed “running of the buses” tradition during Origin matches is a testament to its deep-rooted connection to Queensland’s sporting soul.
Originally established in 1864 and rebuilt in 1884 following a fire, The Caxton Hotel has stood as a steadfast witness to Brisbane’s transformation for over 150 years. From political gatherings and community milestones to live music, karaoke, and local celebrations, the venue has played host to generations of Queenslanders.
Under the Farquhar family’s ownership for the past 28+ years, the Caxton has evolved into a multi-faceted hospitality powerhouse, featuring:
- The award-winning Char Grill & Terrace Bar
- The iconic Cauldron Bar
- Gaming facilities, function spaces, and live entertainment zones
The family’s commitment to preserving the hotel’s heritage while modernising its offerings has made the Caxton a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
The acquisition by SEQ Hospitality aligns with its broader strategy to expand its footprint across South-East Queensland. The Caxton Hotel now joins a prestigious portfolio that includes the Treetops Tavern, Burleigh, Queens Arms Hotel, New Farm, Ashmore Tavern, and Aspley Central Tavern.
Backing the acquisition is Nick Politis, one of the most influential figures in Australian rugby league. As Chairman of the Sydney Roosters, Politis has shaped the sport for decades; pioneering jersey sponsorships, orchestrating marquee signings, and building one of the most successful clubs in NRL history.
His involvement in the purchase of the Caxton Hotel signals more than a business investment; it’s a symbolic alignment of rugby league’s heritage with one of its most iconic venues. Politis’ deep ties to the sport and strategic vision promise to elevate the Caxton’s legacy even further.
Leon Alaban, Head of Hotels at Savills Australia and New Zealand spearheaded the sale with the assistance of Drew Mitchell, Manager at Savills Australia and New Zealand, whose long-standing relationship with the owners was instrumental in securing the appointment.
Commenting on the sale, Mr Alaban said, “The Caxton Hotel is a true Brisbane institution. Its acquisition by Eumundi Group, under the strategic direction of SEQ Hospitality and Fortitudo, reflects the ongoing strength of Queensland’s hospitality sector and the enduring appeal of landmark venues.”
As Brisbane prepares for future global events, including the 2032 Olympic Games, the Caxton Hotel stands ready to continue its legacy - a place where sport, culture, and community converge.
